The Baltimore Ravens had multiple unsung heroes at the cornerback position in the 2023 season.
The Ravens would not have led the NFL in passer rating allowed this past year had it not been for the contributions that they received from Brandon Stephens, Arthur Maulet, and Ronald Darby. Stephens was called on to cover standout wideouts such as Cincinnati Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase over the year. The Ravens signed Maulet and Darby to one-year deals in the offseason, and they each allowed a passer rating under 70.0 in the season.
Stephens is under contract with the Ravens for a mere one more year, while both Maulet and Darby will hit free agency in March. Even if the Ravens decide to re-sign Maulet and Darby, it would be much to ask for these two cornerbacks and also Stephens to mirror their potent 2023 seasons.
The Ravens own two picks in the opening two rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft. Baltimore should look to bolster its offensive line in the first round and then turn its attention to bringing in a cornerback such as former Iowa State defensive back T.J. Tampa in the following round.
Why the Ravens should target T.J. Tampa with the No. 62 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft
T.J. Tampa would be a much-welcome addition to Baltimore’s secondary. From his size at 6'2" to his keen speed in the open field, Tampa is a cornerback who would add another dimension to the Marlon Humphrey-led Ravens pass defense.
Tampa upped his draft value over his final season at Iowa State. He allowed a career-best 54.8 passer rating in coverage. The versatile cornerback also hauled in more interceptions (two) than touchdowns allowed (one).
Tampa most notably improved as a zone defender, having allowed a 45.5 passer rating in such coverage matchups.
Final Word
Tampa sure would have what it takes to blossom under new Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr.
