Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott is once again the talk among fans and media as contract reports continue to emerge ahead of an offseason in which quarterback and franchise are expected to strike an extension.
Recently, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Prescott is seeking a deal in the vicinity of $60 million per year, which would make him the highest-paid quarterback in the league after Joe Burrow singed for an average of $55 million last year.
Well, now Dak might get closer to $65M per year than $60M following the latest news: The salary cap is set to make an unprecedented jump to $255.4 million per team. That's a $30M jump compared to last season, which is a proportionally bigger leap than anything we've seen before in the league. That's music to Prescott's ears.
Per NFL.com, "the giant leap in the salary cap is partially the result of the full repayment of all amounts advanced by the clubs and deferred by the players during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as significant new media deals coinciding with recent regular season and playoff expansion."
Before the official cap number for 2024 was revealed, I broke down why $60M per year was far from a crazy number for Prescott:
Early reports indicate the 2024 salary cap is expected to be in the ballpark of $243 million the upcoming season, which represents an 8.1% increase over last year. Prescott demanding $60 million per year would represent 9.1% increase over Burrow's average of $55M. Per CBS' Joel Corry, the top of the market grew 9.41% between 2022 and 2023.
Now that we know the cap is increasing 13.6%, things change drastically. If the quarterback market grows hand in hand with the cap, Prescott would be looking at an average of $62.5M, which is guaranteed to raise some strong feelings of joy for QB1.
With a roster bonus set to vest in March 17th, things could happen quickly for Prescott and the Cowboys. Look for more information to come on this during the NFL Scouting Combine at the end of the month.
