NASHVILLE — The NFL salary cap consistently increases every year, but in 2024, the cap jump is historic.
The league announced on Friday that the salary cap number for the 2024 league year would be set at $255.4 million. That’s an increase of over $30 million from 2023 and an unprecedented raise.
On the surface, that looks great for the Tennessee Titans. More money to spend for a team desperately needing some roster turnover. But the NFL’s major salary cap bump is actually going to hurt the Titans this season.
Tennessee was never going to realistically spend every last dollar of cap space they had available in 2024. Teams hardly ever do.
What made the Titans position heading into this offseason so valuable was how much cap space they had relative to the rest of the league. But with the cap number coming in higher than expected, every other team around the league is getting more financial flexibility.
That figure of $255.4 million is over $5 million more than what most people anticipated the salary cap to be. That’s an extra $5 million in the pocket of Amy Adams Strunk that Tennessee was probably not going to use in a free agent anyway. But for other teams, it could be the $5 million that allows them to sign a top wide receiver or cornerback. Or maybe even use the franchise tag on an impending free agent.
When you’re one of the exclusive organizations with enough money to splurge on the open market, you have a real chance to add significant talent to your football team. When everyone gets in on the party, things are more difficult .
Just like the purchasing power of a US Dollar decreases when more money is printed, salary cap space becomes devalued when there’s more of it to go around.
Why Titans signing top free agent CB is a ‘buyer beware’ situation
Titans need to beware of signing this free agent CB.
