FOXBOROUGH, Mass – Bill Belichick is known for his stoic demeanor. And that has certainly been shown during every press conference he has held over the past 24 years in New England.
However, Belichick had a very sentimental and emotional moment during his final time taking the podium at Gillette Stadium on Thursday.
And it’s the perfect gift for the fans before departing from New England.
The future Hall of Fame coach got a little choked up when speaking about the support from the fans during his time here.
"The fans here are amazing. There are so many memories of the fans, the sendoffs, the parades, the Sunday's, whatever the situations are, the letters of support. Seeing the fans away from here, at a gas station or a grocery store, or wherever you bump into them, Belichick said. “Patriots fans here, and not just in New England – they extend nationally and internationally, as I've traveled, it's amazing how far the arm reaches. We saw that this year in Germany. So appreciative of the fans for all the support they've given me and my family and this football team.
His voice waivered a few times during his statement.
“It's with so many fond memories and thoughts that I think about the Patriots, and I'll always be a Patriot and I look forward to coming back here. But at this time, we're going to move on and I look forward to and am excited the future. But I'll always be very appreciative of the opportunity here and the support here and Robert, what you've done for me."
Belichick's impact is immense, with former players, coaches, and even athletes from across the world expressing their love for the coach. But to see Belichick open like that and express so much love for the fanbase is something that people across New England will never forget.
While the facial expressions he became so well known for often didn’t reveal anything about his mood, it’s clear that he noticed all the love and support.
Despite the 2023 season not ending how anyone hoped, nothing can erase what Belichick did for this organization.
