San Francisco 49ers star wideout Brandon Aiyuk has a chance for a career game in the NFC Championship game versus the Detroit Lions.

Aiyuk's numbers have risen and improved every year since entering the league. He is coming off the best regular season of his four-year career. In 2023, Aiyuk caught 75 of his 105 targets for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.

The 49ers' fourth-year receiver has a juicy matchup against one of the league's worst pass defenses. The Lions finished the regular season as the sixth worst pass defense, giving up 4,205 yards and allowing an average of 247 yards per game.

The Lions' postseason pass defense has been substantially worse through two games. They have allowed 676 pass yards equating to 338 yards allowed per game.

Simply put, the San Francisco passing attacking should be licking its chops.

Detroit pass defense plays into Aiyuk's hands

Per Sports Info Solutions, the Lions are a zone-based defense. They run zone on 63% of their snaps compared to 28% of man coverage. This will be an issue when attempting to keep Aiyuk under control in the passing game.

Against zone coverage this season, Aiyuk reeled in 47 of his 64 targets for 798 yards and three touchdowns. About 60% of his targets have come against zone defenses.

All of this information points to a potentially huge NFC Championship performance for Aiyuk. As the Niners' leading receiver, it is clear quarterback Brock Purdy trusts him as their downfield target.

Even Aiyuk himself is excited about the opportunity to face this Lions' defense after studying them on tape over the past few weeks.

"I’ve been watching them the past couple weeks… and we’re definitely excited as a unit for the opportunity coming up," Aiyuk said.

In such a pivotal game, I fully expect Kyle Shanahan to exploit the Lions' issues in the secondary. Will Detroit switch to more man coverages? Highly unlikely, if you ask me.

One team's weakness is their opponent's strength. This will be one of the biggest keys to the game.
