The continuous loop that Dallas Cowboys fans are stuck in is one of buying into the hype, carrying the hype to the postseason, and then getting let down in the playoffs.
It is a never-ending cycle and a one that occurs year after year without fail.
Fans are left pointing blame at whoever they can find. Quarterback Dak Prescott has been the subject of more than his fair share of criticism, for example.
But people who have been fans of the team long enough, know there is a bigger problem afoot. That problem stems from the top in how the team is managed.
Year after year Cowboys fans are finding something to get mad at Jerry and Stephen Jones for. And a lot of it is fair. They have become more obsessed with making sure they are in the news than they care about winning, as evidenced by this radio segment from Jerry Jones himself on Monday following the NFL Conference Championship games.
If the Jones family truly cared about taking the next step towards a Lombardi, you think they would do everything in their power to do so.
Well, in The Athletic's About Them Cowboys podcast Jon Machota revealed that is not the case.
In this segment, Machota revealed that in the one of the more recent NFL Drafts, the Cowboys received a call from the Detroit Lions. In this call, the Lions would offer the Cowboys an unidentified player. Stephen Jones' response was "Who is that?"
The Lions explained who the player was (and it was a well-known player, according to the podcast). Stephen would tell them "we'll call you back." This is a fair response as it should allow Stephen time to get with his NFL scouts and his personnel staff to discuss the player, determine if he would benefit the team and start discussing potential trade packages.
And yet, Stephen did none of that.
Stephen would hang up the phone and go back to watching the Draft. Doesn't even tell anyone that someone called. He doesn't go to Will McClay and ask about the player, who he didn't recognize.
The Lions would call the Cowboys back and ask for their thoughts on the player. Stephen would go on to say that the Cowboys weren't interested.
What!? This is wildly unacceptable and if it was a normal Cowboys staffer who handled it this way, they would very likely be fired.
I can understand Stephen not knowing every player in the league. But that is what you employ scouts for. Every team has college and professional scouts. Each is tasked with knowing the players in their assigned areas. If you don't know the player, you get with the person who is in charge of that area and get the information from them.
It's really not a hard concept. The Cowboys have Will McClay on their staff, and he is one of the most well-respected personnel minds in the business. Stephen didn't even ask him!
Every Cowboys' fans blood has the right to be boiling after hearing this. But then again based of Jerry Jones' radio comments earlier, it shouldn't be all that surprising.
