The Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear to have found the new leader of their offense.
The Buccaneers are reportedly working to finalize a deal with former Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen to become their next offensive coordinator, per NFL Network's Mike Garofolo.
Coen's job history over the last several years is jumpy, to say the least. He spent the first six years of his career as the quarterbacks coach at Brown (twice), Rhode Island, and UMass from 2010 to 2015. After serving as the offensive coordinator at Maine from 2016 to 2017, he ended up with the Rams as their assistant WR coach (2018-2019) and assistant QB coach (2020).
He then left to become the offensive coordinator and QB coach at Kentucky for 2021, where he worked with eventual Tennessee Titans QB Will Levis. The Wildcats finished 10-3 and won the Citrus Bowl that year.
Then, in 2022, he returned to the Los Angeles Rams as their offensive coordinator for one season before returning against to Lexington to serve as the Wildcats offensive coordinator again in 2023.
Now, he's back to the NFL again, except this time tasked with trying to keep a promising Tampa Bay offense from 2023 under Dave Canales on the rise.
Speaking of Canales, Coen and Canales both worked under Coach Shane Waldron in their last respective NFL stops before coming to Tampa, so there's some level of connectivity there. Waldron was the passing game coordinator in Los Angeles when Coen was there as an assistant coach. He was also the offensive coordinator in Seattle when Dave Canales was QB coach in 2022.
Perhaps most importantly, Coen was offensive coordinator for the short time that QB Baker Mayfield was in Los Angeles. As such, there is familiarity there for Mayfield as far as having an offensive coordinator that he's worked with.
Provided the deal gets finalized, that could be a good thing for the Bucs' chances of bringing their QB back for 2024 and beyond.
