Baker Mayfield's return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be starting to pick up steam.

The Bucs' incumbent starter met with the media on Friday morning and discussed the reported pending hire of Liam Coen as the new Tampa Bay offensive coordinator as well as the status of his contract negotiations.

"Obviously got to work with Liam in LA.  Great guy.  Really, really great guy.  So if they lock that down for sure, it's a similar system.  Same system, just some different terminology and how he wants to call things.  There's something to say about that with continuity within the offense for skill guys and the offensive line.  It's important to have."

Mayfield also noted that things were picking up between his representation and the Buccaneers regarding a new contract.

"I think now that they're trying to finalize Liam (Coen), I think that's picked up."

Continuity for Mayfield is one of the most important things as far as what he's looking for from Tampa Bay as a return landing spot for 2024 and beyond.  Mayfield's career, especially the last two years, have been anything but stable, having played for the Browns, Panthers, Rams, and Bucs since July 2022.  Bringing in Coen, who served as Mayfield's OC in Los Angeles, clearly helps and is a big feather in the Bucs' cap as they try to bring Mayfield back.

The other thing, of course, is getting Mayfield his WR1 back in Mike Evans.  Mayfield said that he wants Evans back in Tampa Bay if he's going to come back.

Time will tell if that happens.  But for now, it appears you can check one item off of Mayfield's wish list to come back to Tampa.
