Despite leading the San Francisco 49ers on successive playoff comebacks to punch their ticket to Super Bowl 58, Brock Purdy continues to divide opinion.
However, the coaching staff of the Niners' opponents, the Kansas City Chiefs, is clear on where it stands on San Francisco's quarterback.
Asked about Purdy, Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was effusive in his praise, rejecting claims of him being a 'game manager' and making it clear his playmaking ability will provide a difficult challenge for Kansas City.
"All they got to do is put the tape on, in my opinion," Spagnuolo said.
"When you dive into it and you watch him. This is not a quarterback that’s managing or all those tags that they put on. He’s for real. Makes all the throws, really, really smart and then what I didn’t know because I’m not seeing enough of it is how athletic he is.
"I mean, this is another quarterback that, when you cover everything back there and he finds a lane in a pass rush lane he can take off, he did it last week [in the NFC title game]. He’s done it in every playoff game and gets positive yards, that puts a lot of strain on us defensively. Thoroughly, thoroughly impressed with him."
Spagnuolo's sentiments echo those of Andy Reid, who said on Wednesday:
"Yeah, he’s a heck of a player. I remember specifically one of the Saturday afternoons watching him in college, the head coach said, ‘This guy has changed our program.’ Changing a program is big. That’s what he is. He’s doing that in the National Football League. Last week, he did as much with his legs as he did with his arm. He ran the ball well. He’s a good football player. He’s smart and he’s got a great feel for things."
The final pick in the 2022 draft having the capability to go blow for blow with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appears to be difficult for many to wrap their head around.
But the Chiefs, having seen Purdy lead the 49ers back from a 17-point deficit in the NFC Championship Game, in no small part thanks to 52 yards gained on three scrambles, are well aware that is a possibility after he quarterbacked the most efficient offense in football in the regular season.
On this stage, against a quarterback who is arguably the greatest of all time already, many will write Purdy off. The Chiefs will do no such thing.
Super Bowl 58 will be final 49ers game for assistant coach
He’s set to move on.
