The biggest decision of the Chicago Bears' off-season will soon be upon us regarding what the team plans to do at the quarterback position.
The Bears will have to choose between retaining quarterback Justin Fields as the team's starter and trading the first overall pick once again or choosing to draft a rookie with the top pick and trading Fields to another team for a decent haul in 2024. The latter just got a lot more difficult for the Bears front office.
According to multiple sources around the league, the Las Vegas Raiders are expected to hire former Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy for the same position on head coach Antonio Pierce's coaching staff.
Following the decision to name Getsy as their next offensive coordinator, many quickly looked to connect the dots between the Raiders and the team's interest in joining the sweepstakes for Fields.
During his last press conference with the Bears leading up to the season finale against the Green Bay Packers, Getsy was asked about his relationship with Fields and how it evolved over the last two seasons in Chicago.
"We have a great relationship and we work really well together," Getsy said. "He inspires me on the daily with his mentality, his focus, his faith and all that stuff. We have a really good relationship and I think Justin's future is super bright."
Despite the glowing praise from his former offensive coordinator, the Raiders should steer away from pairing the two back together again and seemingly choose Getsy over Fields. Choosing between one or the other and not both is simple. The Bears offense has clearly struggled over the last two seasons with Getsy as the play-caller and Fields running the offense.
The Bears offense ranked 26th in passing yards, and had 25 giveaways during the 2023 season. Getsy was single-handedly tasked with developing Fields over the last two seasons in Chicago and that development was never evident on the field.
Prior to hiring Getsy, the Raiders attempted to hire USC quarterbacks coach and senior offensive assistant Kliff Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator until he pulled his name out of the running. Kingsbury has obvious connections to his college quarterback Caleb Williams, who is expected to be the top quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, and now is the expected front runner for the Washington Commanders vacant offensive coordinator position.
With the Raiders seemingly now out of the picture in terms of potentially trading for Fields, the Bears potential trade partner list shrinks by one. The number of teams looking to add a quarterback in 2024 are few and far between, and the list grows even smaller when you exclude teams in position to snag a top quarterback in the draft.
The two teams who appear to be at the top of the list to potentially trade for Fields would be the Atlanta Falcons and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both teams are looking for an immediate upgrade at the position and are outside the range to draft one of the top prospects in this year's class.
Having one team out of the running also hurts the Bears even more when factoring in the compensation bargaining aspect. The more teams interested in trading for Fields, the higher the asking price rises for the Bears. With the Raiders out of the picture, the Bears have one less team to field offers from.
As for Getsy, he will join the Raiders growing offensive staff after leading a top-3 rushing offense in each of the last two seasons. However, how will his offense look without Fields after the Bears quarterback led the team in rushing each of the last two seasons?
As for the Bears, the team will enter into the 2024 season with a new offensive coordinator in Shane Waldron but it's yet to be determined who his quarterback will end up being next season.
