Cleveland Browns took perhaps their biggest list of the 2023 season back in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Nick Chubb tore the same knee up for the second time, the first was back at Georgia. When Chubb went down, Cleveland lost much of the identity of their offense.
Chubb is currently progressing through his rehab to get back on the field, which looked like it could be a tough task to do when the injury happened. During Andrew Berry’s after-season press conference on Monday, he shared some insight on where things stand with Chubb.
"Nobody wants to see that carry in Pittsburgh be the last time he carries the ball for the Cleveland Browns,” Berry said. We will, obviously, work to keep him on the team."
Cleveland and Chubb will need to work through some contract details. The star running back has just one year left on his deal. For the 2024 season, Chubb is going to have a cap hit of $15.8 million. The number is fine if Chubb can come back and be the same player, but would be a high number if he is just a shell of himself after the injury.
Cleveland can cut Chubb and have just $4 million in dead cap, it would save them over $11 million. That is not what the Browns want to see happen and that’s not what fans want to see happen.
From Chubb’s perspective, having no guaranteed money past next year would not be ideal. We all know the shelf life of a running back is not long in the NFL, so you have to maximize your earnings.
Chubb comes off as a team-first guy most of the time, but he has a life and perhaps generational wealth he wants to build. Ideally, the Browns and Chubb can rework his contract for this year, then add something for the 2025 season at minimum.
It’ll all depend on how Chubb returns to the field and what he looks like. According to Berry, he’s doing everything he needs to.
“You would have never guessed Nick (Chubb) was out for the season with how he operated in the building."

Two teams that have a lot in common.
