The Chicago Bears have found their new offensive coordinator in former Seattle Seahawks' offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.
Since announcing the official decision on Monday regarding the newest member of head coach Matt Eberflus' coaching staff, many fans are eager to see what the Bears' offense will look like in 2024.
If Waldron plans to bring his offense with him from Seattle, there's a a few hints pointing toward the answer to that question.
During the 2023 season, the Seahawks' offense ranked 14th in passing yards per game and 17th in points per game scored with quarterback Geno Smith and the team's trio of wide receivers in DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
There's the first key hint right there. The Seahawks' offense in 2023 relied heavily on each of their three wide receivers to operate effectively. Metcalf finished the season with 1,114 yards and 8 touchdowns, Lockett had 894 yards and 5 touchdowns, and Smith-Njigba recorded 628 yards and four touchdowns in his rookie season.
The Bears currently have four wide receivers under contract for the 2024 season: DJ Moore, Tyler Scott, Velus Jones Jr., and Nsimba Webster. Upgrades are clearly and desperately needed in that department.
Moore is already established as a star at the position and the Bears should consider adding both a free agent signing and a top draft pick to the room as well. The Bears could even look into giving Darnell Mooney, who's expected to enter free agency, another shot if Waldron wants him. If not here's who the Bears can look into:
Notable Free Agent WRs:
Mike Evans
Tee Higgins
Calvin Ridley
Michael Pittman Jr.
Marquise Brown
Curtis Samuel
Josh Reynolds
Notable WR Prospects:
Marvin Harrison Jr.
Rome Odunze
Malik Nabers
Keon Coleman
Jacob Cowing
Malik Washington
Joshua Cephus
Waldron's offense in Seattle also showcased another interesting tendency in 2023. While the Seahawks ran their fair-share of three wide receiver sets, the team also had the second-highest percentage of 12 personnel formations (one running back, two tight ends, and two receivers) and the tenth-highest percentage of 13 personnel formations (one running back, three tight ends, and one receiver).
Therefore, the tight end position will also be a key area the Bears will need to address on offense. Currently, the team only has Cole Kmet and Stephen Carlson on the roster heading into 2024 with Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis expected to depart as unrestricted free agents. Lewis could potentially return on a new contract with the Bears but it seems Tonyan will end up walking. Here's some help that can be found elsewhere:
Notable Free Agent TEs
Dalton Schultz
Hunter Henry
Mike Gesicki
Noah Fant
Colby Parkinson
Notable TE Prospects
Brock Bowers
Ja'Tavion Sanders
Jaheim Bell
Dallin Holker
Ben Sinnott
The Bears will need to add a lot of pieces in order to properly run Waldron's expected system in 2024 but the team has the arsenal to do so. The Bears are armed with just over $50 million in cap space and currently have six picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.
A main piece of Waldron's offense will of course be the player running it, which will be the front office's next order of business. Will the Bears keep quarterback Justin Fields in Waldron's offense or will the team draft Caleb Williams with the top pick?
Five free agents the Bears can target playing in the Conference Championships
The front office will be watching closely
