NASHVILLE — Brian Callahan will be announced as the 20th head coach in Tennessee Titans franchise history this week. He has his work cut out for him, taking over a club that has a litany of roster needs and finished 6-11 last season.
Callahan and his new staff will need to hit the ground running.
The former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator's first moves in Tennessee will be heavily scrutinized. Fixing the Titans offense requires more than just Callahan's arrival. Whom the new coach brings in to assist him in that mission will be as important as Callahan's hire itself.
Keep an eye on Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.
Tennessee is interested in bringing in Brown in the same role to help Callahan implement his system, according to team sources. It is my understanding that Callahan plans to be the Titans play-caller as well as their head coach. Setting up a system like the one in Cincinnati between Callahan and Bengals head coach Zac Taylor will be the objective.
"Make no mistake about it, (Bengals head coach) Zac Taylor calls the plays, but Brian Callahan is a part of the diologue with Zac Taylor on every single play until time doesn't allow any more debate or conversation about it," said Cincinnati radio analyst and former Bengals offensive lineman Dave Lapham on 104.5 The Zone. "Then, Zac Taylor will make a decision. Brian Callahan has tremendous input on a play-by-play basis even though he's not the voice that's going into the helmet of the quarterback."
Brown's 2023 campaign in Carolina was an abject disaster, but the belief is that he can be a good partner for Callahan as the new head coach tries to drag Tennessee into the modern age.
The Titans were scheduled to have an in-person interview with Brown for the head coaching role on Monday. His first virtual interview with the team about their vacancy was on Jan. 18. The 37-year old former Georgia running back, joined Carolina's staff as an offensive coordinator under now-fired head coach Frank Reich for the 2023 season after spending 2020-2022 with the Los Angeles Rams.
Winning the Super Bowl in 2021 with LA, Brown was thought of so highly by Rams head coach Sean McVay that he was given the title of assistant head coach after his first season with the team.
While Brown's season with the Panthers did not go to plan, he might be a better fit for what Callahan hopes to accomplish in Tennessee.
Titans hire Brian Callahan as the franchise’s 20th head coach
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans have hired Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan. Controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk secured the 20th head coach in her franchise's history. 10 candidates will have interviewed in the 12 days since Strunk fired former coach Mike Vrabel. Callahan was the first person to interview for Tennessee virtually. The Titans […]
