For the first time in five years, the Cincinnati Bengals need a new offensive coordinator.

Brian Callahan is leaving Cincinnati to become the next head coach of the Tennessee Titans. It was only a week ago that he became the longest tenured OC in the NFL after his run of five years on the job.

Fortunately for the Bengals, there are few things more common nowadays than NFL teams replacing that position.

Callahan's replacement in Cincinnati hasn't been decided yet, but when it happens, every NFL team will have changed their offensive coordinator since 2022. That was two years ago!

With several head coaching spots opening every year, offensive assistants are the most likely candidates to be promoted to those jobs. Callahan was the third head coach hired in this cycle, and surprisingly was the first former OC to land one of the gigs. He surely won't be the last.

As OCs leave for greater opportunities, the staffs of fired head coaches also factor in to the total turnover. The Seattle Seahawks letting go of HC Pete Carroll allowed OC Shane Waldron to leave for the same position for the Chicago Bears.

Pressure for aspiring teams to match up with top offenses falls on the quarterback and play-caller. The window of opportunity for both to succeed is very slim in today's NFL, which is yet another reason why clubs go through them more frequently than ever.

Callahan lasting half a decade in Cincinnati is pretty rare. That he wasn't the play-caller likely kept him out of consideration for head coaching opportunities up until the last two years. The Bengals were not in a rush to move on from him.

They have no choice now, much like most of the NFL over the past 24 months.
