Jerod Mayo has been busy as the new Patriots head coach, looking to build his coaching staff for the 2024 season. It will be a completely new look, with Mayo needing to find a new offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and special teams coordinator.

However, New England may be one step closer to filling their open defensive coordinator job.

According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, DeMarcus Covington is considered to be a "strong favorite" for the position.

Covington was interviewed for the position last week.

He joined the Patriots staff in 2017 and has been working with Jerod Mayo since he returned in 2019. He started as a coaching assistant, before being named an outside linebackers coach in 2019. In 2020 he took over as defensive line coach and has been there for the past few seasons.

His ability to move through the ranks so quickly earned him some recognition, being named one of a few NFL coaches to watch in future years by NFL Network.

Along with Covington, the Patriots have interviewed Panthers' Tem Lukabu, Broncos' Christian Parker, Saints' Michael Hodges, and Steelers' Gerald Alexander.

But the players are familiar with Covington, so let's see if Mayo makes it official in the coming days.

Breer also provided some details on the offensive coordinator position, starting by talking about how the Patriots interviewed former tight ends coach Nick Caley. However, he can also see them taking a different route if they didn't look towards a younger and less experienced coach.

"I could also see Mayo adding an older assistant with head coaching experience as he settles into the job," Breer wrote.

The team will look completely different next season, but with the combine and draft right around the corner, it's time to start building up the new coaching staff.
