Bill Belichick's future is still unknown.
And for a coach that won six Super Bowl championships, that's pretty hard to believe. But alas, that is the situation.
And ESPN's Adam Schefter provided some additional information on the matter when speaking on Get Up on Thursday morning.
Since the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick mutually parted ways after 24 seasons, there was only one team that was interested in possibly bringing him onto their staff.
Things with the Atlanta Falcons were looking positive, but it had seriously slowed down in recent days.
"They interviewed him for a second time last Friday in person. And since then, the Falcons have paraded through a series of candidates for second interviews and other interviews and (have) scheduled more and more talks with other candidates," Schefter said. "That doesn't sound like a team that's ready to make a move on Bill Belichick."
"In this case, the Falcons have shown that they are interested in a lot of people," he added. "And in their own words, they described to me over the weekend that their coaching search after they met with Belichick for a second time is 'wide open.'"
So that makes things pretty clear regarding the situation and Schefter had the perfect words to describe it.
"So if it's wide open after you met with Bill Belichick twice, that certainly tells you that he's not the favorite for the job," he said.
If the Falcons decide to go in another direction, none of the other teams with openings have showed interesting in Belichick, so the head coach may not be leading a team during the 2024 season.
This situation is similar to when Tom Brady left the Patriots to explore free agency. Only the Los Angeles Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were serious about signing him. And once again we saw that with Lamar Jackson prior to the 2023 season.
"Here we have the greatest coach of all time, who's sitting there with a lack of interest, which boggles my mind, but we've seen it before Lamar, we've seen it before with Brady, and we see it unfolding now with Bill Belichick."
However, there are some factors that have to be given serious consideration when it comes to Bill Belichick. First of all, Belichick is 71 years old, so it's unknown how many more years he will coach for. And since Brady left, the Patriots have shown a serious decline in recent years, with many of Belichick's decisions regarding players and personnel coming under fire. So with that, giving him complete power of the organization can be a major fear.
Yet, even if he does come in and turn a team around, Dan Orlovsky raised an interesting point.
"Once he walks into your building, no one else gets credit but him. That's part of that power struggle as well," Orlovsky said. "Like once he goes and wins, 'Oh my gosh, Bill Belichick saved the day.' Nobody else is going to get credit for the potential success."
Let's see how things turn out.
