Jerod Mayo has begun the process of building his coaching staff. And that is starting with a defensive coordinator.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Mayo is set to interview Carolina Panthers outside linebacker coach Tem Lukaba.
And he is already familiar with the Boston area, having served as the defensive coordinator for Boston College.
Lukaba began his coaching career at Rutgers as the Director of player development. He went to Rhode Island for a season in 2008, but returned to Rutgers in 2010 as the outside linebackers coach.
He had his first stint in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a defensive assistant, but went back to down to college until 2016, where he returned to the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers as a defensive quality control coach.
Once again, he jumped back down to college for a season, but joined the Cincinnati Bengals in 2019.
From 2020 to 2022 he spent time at Boston College, and then joined the Panthers staff in 2023.
So it's safe to say he has a lot of experience.
The Patriots could also look to promote from within for the position, with offers reportedly made to both of Bill Belichick's sons. And DeMarcus Covington is another name to watch out for.
This is probably just the first of many interviews that will happen.
