The Green Bay Packers will be advancing in the NFC playoffs after dominating the number two seed Dallas Cowboys on the road in the Wild Card Round.
The Packers became the first #7 seed to win in the Wild Card Round since the league expanded the playoffs to seven teams per conference in 2020.
A major part of the Packers' win on Sunday was the play of running back Aaron Jones who is starting to play his best football of the season at the most opportune time.
Jones finished his night in Dallas with 118 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns along with one reception for 13 yards. He has now rushed for 100+ yards in each career game and has scored nine rushing touchdowns against the Cowboys.
Jones has found himself a second home at AT&T Stadium playing back in the home state he grew up in. Only Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson has averaged more rushing yards per game against the Cowboys in NFL History with a least four games played against the team.
"It was a full circle moment," Jones explained. "It was just a special place and Dallas is a special place to me and it feels like home."
Jones' impact in the run game on Sunday was able to allow the Packers offense as a whole become more explosive down the field, which ended with the team scoring the most points ever at AT&T Stadium.
"When you're able to run the ball, it opens everything else up," Jones said. "I think we were able to set them up pretty nice on Luke [Musgrave's] touchdown. We saw a lot of outside zone all game and hit them with that."
The win on Sunday was the fourth consecutive game Jones rushed for 100+ yards, joining Ahman Green as the only running backs to ever do so in Packers history. Jones also scored more rushing touchdowns (3) on Sunday against the Cowboys than he did throughout the entire 2023 regular season (2).
Jones had a frustrating regular season after being limited due to injuries that even forced him to miss six games. However, since being fully back in Week 15, Jones has taken his game to a different level and the previous injuries might have been the best case scenario for the Packers' offense in the playoffs.
"It was a blessing in disguise, I would say, that he didn't have the wear and tear throughout the course of the season," head coach Matt LaFleur said after the game. "He's not the biggest guy, but pound-for-pound, I don't know if there's many tougher than him. Being here now, he's got more tread on the tire."
A healthy Aaron Jones gives the Packers' offense a entirely new dynamic to game plan against and that was put on notice for the rest of the NFC on Sunday. Jones played 60+ percent of the offensive snaps for the second consecutive week with running back AJ Dillon out of the lineup.
The Packers tried to find some complement to Jones in the running game with Emanuel Wilson, but the team was clearly missing out not having Dillon on the field, who is currently dealing with a fractured thumb plus a neck injury.
Without Dillon on the field, Jones' veteran leadership on the offense had to shine even more during the team's first playoff game.
"I can’t say enough about the guy, the football player, what he means to our team and the leadership he brings," LaFleur said. "He's a rare guy, there's not many like him. How he encourages his teammates and how he uplifts his teammates."
The Packers will need Jones to keep up his momentum heading into the Divisional Round against the team's biggest postseason foe in the San Francisco 49ers.
Jones has been held to under 90 rushing yards in each career game against the 49ers. If the Packers want to pull off another road upset against the top seed in the NFC, Jones will have to lead the way and change that narrative.
