The Kansas City Chiefs defense has been one of the best units in the league this year, if not the best. They are the only team in the league now allowed an offense to score 30 points on them.
A huge reason why is because of the depth they have had on that side of the ball. Their cornerback unit has some of the best depth we have seen, along with the linebacker room, which has three guys who could start and be the best linebacker on a ton of teams in the NFL.
One of those guys is Willie Gay Jr., who has been on the team for the last four seasons. While he hasn't quite turned into what the Chiefs were wanting, and other guys around him have elevated their play, he has still been a vital part of the defense over the years.
On Monday, he announced on Twitter that he will likely not be returning to the Chiefs in 2024.
It's looking like Ive probably played my last game in arrowhead. Damn im going to miss that place. Nothing like it lets go get this Ring to end it the right way.
Technically, Gay Jr. can play another game in Arrowhead Stadium if the Chiefs and Houston Texans both advance to the Championship Round of the playoffs. That would require the Texans to beat the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills or Pittsburgh Steelers to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs could franchise tag him, however, if he is saying this, it's almost as if the team has informed him that he won't be back, or he just knows he won't be back. Not to mention, the Chiefs have a ton of other issues they have to address this offseason.
If this is the end of the line, Gay Jr. will have finished his Chiefs career with 233 tackles, four interceptions, five sacks, four fumble recoveries, and one pick-six. Gay Jr. was part of a great 2020 draft class.
