The Tennessee Titans had a disappointing campaign this past season. Mike Vrabel is out, and the roster turnover is expected to be sizable with plenty of veterans seemingly on their way out. One of those players is star running back Derrick Henry.
Even in a season when everything seemed to go wrong for the two-tone blue, 'The King' remained right. He was second in the NFL in rushing yards. Aside from that, though, the offense was inconsistent.
In fact, both sides of the ball were a rollercoaster for the Titans this past season. Henry discussed what was 'different' about the Titans this season – compared to years past.
Henry mentioned his injury last season. The veteran RB noted that this year's team did not seem to have the 'next man up' reliability that the Titans possessed in past seasons. That trait was not glowing on the roster.
In previous years Henry felt that if a player were to get injured, their replacement would be waiting in the wings, prepared and chomping at the bit. Based on his words and body language here, the 2023-2024 team was not quite as solid in that area.
You may remember that the Titans were historically injured between 2021 and 2022. In 2022, they placed a league-high 34 players on injured reserve. In 2021, they played 91 players over the course of the season, a record high.
Even still, they found some success when it came to the winning column, totaling 19 wins over those two seasons.
This season, they grabbed just six wins. The depth did not step up in ways that it did previously, and ultimately, it doomed them.
Henry also discussed that the 'vibe' around the team recently was not the same as the past couple of years. The camaraderie had changed, and many veterans noticed it.
On the podcast, Henry also discussed the trade possibilities that arose this past season at the deadline. He said that two teams were very close to making a deal for him. Ultimately, a trade was never finalized, and Henry completed the season with Tennessee.
