The New Orleans Saints will have plenty to do regarding their cap space once again this offseason. An annual tradition, they'll need to do some heavy restructures and make it all work on the money side of their organization.

They began that process earlier in the season, but a recent move was the restructure of star cornerback Marshon Lattimore's contract.

New Orleans converted $13.79 million of his $15 million 2024 base salary into an option bonus, creating $11.032 million in 2024 cap space.

Why is this move even  more noteworthy than others? The decision to swap into an option bonus rather than a signing bonus opens the door for a potential trade during this offseason. The Saints could move on from their best cornerback in recent memory.

During Wednesday's press conference, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis did not put the possibility to bed, either.

"There's a reason, but I'm not going to get into it." — Lommis on the choice to use an option bonus on Lattimore

He did not go into further detail about Lattimore's deal or future with the team. Loomis referred to the restructure as just 'cap management' for the Saints.

If the Saints move Lattimore, they need to get a first-round pick for him. He is a top 10 CB in the NFL when healthy. Lattimore also has multiple years remaining on his deal. In the first half of this past season, he played like one of the best cornerbacks in the league.

Lattimore is 27 years old. Trading him would leave quite a hole in the secondary for a New Orleans team that Loomis is excited about for 2024.

The New Orleans Saints have been known for one major aspect as a franchise. With Mickey Loomis and Khai Harley as leaders in the front office, they've maneuvered the salary cap in ways that many folks will not understand.  They've started that process for their 2024 salary cap, too. Their first major move was to […]
