So far, the Las Vegas Raiders have everything figured out on their staff, besides the entire offensive side of the ball. Okay, so maybe they don't really have anything figured out other than the head coach in Antonio Pierce and the general manager in Tom Telesco. The first piece of business should be to hire an offensive coordinator to pair with the potential new QB they could draft.
While it feels like every team in the league pretty much has their staff set, the Raiders are taking their sweet, precious time. They are interviewing and requesting to interview candidates, but nothing is really happening.
Now, there is a new rumor in the mill. This time, it's a current head coach of a major college that could be the Raiders' next offensive coordinator. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is hearing some things.
When news emerged earlier this month that multiple teams are considering possibly hiring UCLA coach Chip Kelly to become the team's offensive coordinator, it could have been interpreted as part of an effort by Kelly to get someone to consider him even more seriously. Nothing has materialized for Kelly so far. There's one team he might specifically be targeting — the Raiders. That's the word percolating out of Mobile, Alabama, where plenty of NFL folks are gathered for Senior Bowl practices. With Antonio Pierce taking over as head coach, the Raiders will need a good offensive coach. It's not known, however, whether Pierce would be interested in adding Kelly to his staff. – Mike Florio, PFT
Kelly was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-2015, where he went 26-21 in those three seasons. Then, the very next season, he was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and finished 2-14. He has since coached in college for the UCLA Bruins for three years.
Kelly wouldn't be a bad offensive coordinator. However, I can't see him getting back into professional football. This report doesn't mean this will happen at all, but Florio does have sources. At this point, it's all about finding an offensive coordinator that fits the style of play Antonio Pierce wants.
Antonio Pierce to give veteran coach more prominent role on Raiders’ staff
Now the Raiders must build out their staff.
