With the 2024 NFL Draft quickly approaching, NFL scouts and executives are starting to finally get a true in person look at some of the top prospects in the draft this week at the Reese's Senior Bowl.
Over 150 prospects in the draft are in attendance to show off their skills and also meet with various scouts and reporters ahead of April's draft. One name in particular found himself in the spotlight on the first day of practice on Tuesday and even started making a name for himself.
USC wide receiver Brenden Rice, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, turned some heads on Tuesday to kick off the 2024 Senior Bowl. After his impressive performance on the field, Rice took the time after the first day of practice to praise his former college quarterback Caleb Williams, who is widely expected to be drafted by the Chicago Bears with the first overall pick in the draft.
"He's a game changer," Rice said regarding Williams at the Senior Bowl on Tuesday. "Like Cam Newton went ahead and said 'you have game managers and you have game changers' and that's all I'm going to say. He's a game changer."
Williams and Rice played together during the last two seasons at USC with Rice becoming Williams' go-to target during the 2023 season. Williams and Rice connected 45 times for 791 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season and are both looking to continue their careers into the NFL.
Williams has solidified himself as the top quarterback prospect in the draft and many believe he could be the best quarterback prospect the league as seen since Andrew Luck entered the league in 2012.
Bears general manager Ryan Poles and the rest of the team's front office will soon have a difficult choice to make regarding whether or not they should be the team to draft Williams with the first overall pick in the draft.
The Bears traded the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Carolina Panthers who then used the selection to draft quarterback Bryce Young. Chicago instead went into the season with quarterback Justin Fields.
After finishing the season 7-10 and once again in fourth place in the NFC North, the Bears could look to change things up at the quarterback position with the top pick in the draft given to them by the Panthers. Williams is an elite talent entering the draft and could be too much to pass up this time around.
Rice, on the other hand, is looking to make a name for himself at the Senior Bowl in a loaded wide receiver class. He gotten off to a hot start after the first day of practice showing off his physicality and crisp route running ability in front of multiple scouts.
The Bears will also be in the market for another wide receiver to pair with DJ Moore under the new offense led by offensive coordinator Shane Waldron in 2024. The team currently has just three wide receivers on the roster next season who played meaningful snaps during the regular season including Moore.
Perhaps the Bears scouting party in attendance at the Senior Bowl could see something they like in Rice and potentially pair him back up with his college quarterback at the next level to replicate these kinds of explosive plays once again.
The Bears currently have six selections in the 2024 NFL Draft including two selections in the Top-10. Poles has a limited number of choices to land serious difference makers in the draft and will need to make each pick count.
Eight prospects the Bears should have their eyes on at the Senior Bowl
Could these prospects become future Bears?
