After losing Daniel Jones to a season-ending injury, it was clear the New York Giants had to look to bring in someone to help.
And with Tyrod Taylor, who was serving as the backup, placed on injured reserve and out for at least three more games, they only had one quarterback on the active roster.
The Giants also brought in Matt Barkley, signing him to the practice squad at the end of October. And according to Adam Schuefter, they have now signed former Panthers, 49ers, Seahawks, and Colts quarterback Jacob Eason.
The two will fight for the spot to serve as the backup to undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito.
Jones suffered a season-ending injury after he torn his ACL in the Giants loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. And now they could be without Tyrod Taylor for the rest of the season, with head coach Brian Daboll telling reporters that he was uncertain if the quarterback can return.
Eason joined the league in 2020, being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round. He was the third-string quarterback behind Phillip Rivers and Jacoby Brissett, not playing at all in his rookie year.
The next year he won the backup role for Carson Wentz, but was waived in the middle of October. The Seattle Seahawks wasted no time, claiming him off waivers. After remaining there for the rest of the year, he was waived prior to the start of the 2022 season.
He signed with the Panthers' practice squad the next day, and despite being elevated to the active roster during his stint with in Carolina, he was waived in November.
Determined to keep going, Eason worked out for the San Fransisco 49ers a few days later and signed with their practice squad. They released him at the beginning of January.
Eason joined the Panthers once again in 2023, signing a reserve/future deal but was waived in May, prior to the start of preseason.
And now he is getting a chance with the Giants.
It has not been an easy road for the young quarterback, but maybe he can finally make a name for himself in New York.
