The New England Patriots took a chance on Jack Jones in the 2022 Draft, and it seemed to work for them during the cornerback's rookie season.
However, this season has been very different.
The Patriots waived Jones on Monday, following their Week 10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt, Germany. However, this move has been coming, with this past week being the tipping point.
The latest issues began last week after Jones was benched for the entirety of the first quarter in the Patriots game against the Washington Commanders. Belichick initially said that this was not disciplinary, but it was later revealed that it was due to Jones missing curfew and showing up late to the team hotel.
Fellow cornerback J.C. Jackson didn't just miss curfew, but instead didn't show up at all to the team hotel and was sidelined for the first two defensive series. Jackson was also permitted from traveling with the team to Frankfurt, but Jones was allowed to go.
Yet, on Sunday, he was sidelined for the beginning of the game once again, with Shaun Wade getting another start.
This all led to the release, with The Athletic's Jeff Howe reporting that "there had been a handful events that led to this, including more recently when he fell out of favor and lost trust among the defense and his play had deteriorated. The team didn’t feel a turnaround in performance was coming."
The Boston Herald's Doug Kyed also provided some additional information on the matter, reporting that Jones was given the chance to "improve his attitude this week in Germany and didn't."
Controversy has followed Jones throughout his whole career.
In college, Jones became a starter during his sophomore season at USC, but was kicked out prior to his junior year due to poor grades. He then went to a junior college in California to improve his grades before committing to Arizona State. During that time he was arrested at a Panda Express for commercial burglary. At Arizona State, he was suspended for a team conduct related matter in 2020.
Many teams opted not to draft him due to these issues, but the Patriots saw promise and took a chance. It paid off at first, with Jones recording 30 total tackles (25 solo) with two interceptions and one touchdown during his rookie season.
However prior to the start of his second season, Jones dealt with a lot of legal issues during the preseason, after getting arrested for in June for trying to bring two loaded firearms on a plane. Those charges were officially dropped ahead of the New England Patriots' season opener in September.
Just a few days later, Jones was placed on injured reserve to start the season with a hamstring injury, meaning he was out for at least four games.
So far this season, Jones has 12 total tackles and one pass defended across four games.
Now let's see if any teams want to take a chance and make a move to claim him off waivers.
