The Las Vegas Raiders won on Sunday Night Football, doing something they had yet to do this season, but maybe a few times. They ran the ball down the New York Jets' throat and locked up on defense.
The run game hasn't really been there besides the last two games. Even with 2022's leading rusher, the Raiders have struggled to do anything big in the running game. On Sunday, they had their best game of the season regarding running the ball.
Josh Jacobs had his best game, and maybe having his best two games of the season paired with Josh McDaniels being gone correlates to each other. Maybe they don't. We don't know, but we do know that Josh Jacobs had one of the Raiders' greatest players ever in his corner.
"I talked to Bo Jackson this week, and you know, he told me, he said, 'Man, run a moth*****ker over, pick him up, and I'm going to come back 40 seconds later.' So that's the mentality I had this week," Jacobs told reporters in the locker room.
When you're a running back, what's better than hearing from a guy you likely looked up to? One of the most talented running backs the league has ever seen and one of the greatest athletes ever? If he tells you that, you do it. If he told me that, I'd go out and try. That's what Jacobs did.
Despite the tough start, Jacobs is somehow still third in the league in rushing yards, just 100 yards behind the first-place rusher, Christian McCaffrey. Jacobs also has the sixth-most rushing touchdowns in the league.
The one thing that seems to hurt his case as having a good season is the yards per carry. He is getting the ball a ton and not getting a lot of yards per carry. His yards per carry average is 3.3, while McCaffrey's is 4.9. That is a major difference, as Jacobs has about 30 more rushes and 100 fewer yards.
But he doesn't care about the carries. He wants the ball when the going gets tough.
“Some people don’t want the burden. S**t, I want the burden."
