If anyone asks Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich if the team's roster needs help, his answer is no.
The current roster sits at 1-8 on the season, and Bryce Young's progress as a quarterback has stalled. It has produced frustration among ownership and also placed Reich on the hot seat. But still, Reich believes he has a team that is good enough on any given Sunday.
"We have all the players we need to win football games," Reich said. "Are we always evolving and developing on offense? Yes, of course. So, with the vision we have for our offense this year, we don’t need anybody else. We have winning receivers. We have winning tight ends. We have to just play winning football."
Reich's comments were meant to instill confidence in his group. No coach is going to throw his team under the bus. It was also in response to recent comments made by Kirk Herbstreit, who said the Panthers lack the players to run the style offense Young needs to succeed.
The only problem is, if it is not the players — then it's the coaches.
Carolina, reading between the lines of what Reich said, isn't winning because the coaches haven't prepared the team for each contest.
And heading into Week 11, with Reich already feeling pressure from ownership to not only win but also show improvement from the offense, he may be giving up any leverage he has left to save his job.
If the team is good enough to win and isn't, the problem falls at the feet of one person: the head coach and his staff. So, inadvertently, Reich may have put even more pressure on himself to find the Panthers' path forward.
"I have to do a better job as a head coach, getting our offense playing more consistently to win football games," Reich said. "But when I look at our groups, our position groups, and I look at our opponents, I see opportunities to win. We call plays, I watch the tape, and when I watch the tape, I see plenty of evidence that we are making winning plays.”
Panthers vs. Cowboys opening odds already paint a bleak picture
If things couldn’t get worse for the Carolina Panthers, after dropping to 1-8, next on the schedule is the Dallas Cowboys.
