The main question surrounding the New England Patriots coming out of the bye week is who is the starting quarterback going into Sunday's contest against the New York Giants?
Yet, to start the week there still doesn't seem to be an answer according to offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.
“I think assistant coaches make recommendations, head coaches make decisions," O'Brien said. "At the end of the day, Bill (Belichick) will make that decision at some point and we’ll go from there.”
So what is his plan going into the week?
“For me, I basically get everybody ready to play," O'Brien added.
In Week 10, Mac Jones was benched after a poor performance against the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt, Germany. And it was Bailey Zappe who replaced him.
In previous games when Zappe replaced Jones this season, Belichick made it seem that it was due to the large score deficit. However, this time was clearly different.
And while the coaching staff has been quick to reaffirm that Jones will remain the starter earlier this season, they didn't comment after the game in Germany.
O'Brien further added that while Jones began by taking first-team reps last week during practice, Bailey Zappe and Will Grier were also rotated in there.
And when asked about Malik Cunningham, O'Brien didn't rule out that the undrafted rookie could get an opportunity.
"He’s really improved in all areas," O'Brien said.
Practice this week will be very telling for the Patriots who need to plan for who will be the starter heading into a winnable matchup against the Giants.
We'll have to wait and see.
