The Tennessee Volunteers' pass rush has been one of the best in the SEC through the first two months of the season. However, against the Kentucky Wildcats, the Vols' normally vaunted defensive front was able to do little to disrupt Kentucky's passing attack.
The Vols were only able to generate one sack of Kentucky QB Devin Leary on the night, which was made by DL Omarr Norman-Lott for an 11-yard loss. All-SEC candidate James Pearce, Jr. only totaled a single tackle for the game.
At his press conference after the game, it was abundantly clear from Josh Heupel as to why he believed his pass rush wasn't able to get home against the Wildcats' QB. Asked by a reporter why he believed his pass rush was slowed, Heupel sat silent for several seconds before saying "next question".
It's a second straight week in which Heupel has publicly questioned the officials without actually saying a word. After the Alabama game where the Vols were flagged 8 times for 55 yards and the Tide once for 5 yards, Heupel also held quiet for a bit before calling for the next question.
Once again, the Vols were flagged 8 times for 55 yards. Kentucky was flagged 4 times for 21 yards. Once again, the Vols' defensive front appeared to get tugged a few times that likely warranted penalties. Once again, those flags didn't fly.
It's a huge win for the Vols, who improved to 6-2. It's Heupel's third win over the Wildcats in three tries. It was a great day for the running game, and the passing game had splash plays not seen much this season.
However, the defense should have been credited for a few more plays with some flags that never came. Eventually, Heupel won't be able to stay silent about it.
