The Los Angeles Rams might be without their starting quarterback for the next few weeks. According to The Athletic's beat writer Jourdan Rodrigue, the team is evaluating Matthew Stafford's situation, and placing him on the injured reserve hasn't been ruled out.

If that's the case, Stafford would miss at least the next four games. Either way, it seems unlikely that he will be able to play against the Green Bay Packers next Sunday. The games following their bye week are against the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals, and Cleveland Browns.

Matthew Stafford left the game against the Dallas Cowboys early because of his thumb injury. Backup Brett Rypien played for the rest of the game, completing five of 10 passes for 42 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions.

"He banged it on the two-point attempt," Rams head coach Sean McVay said regarding Stafford's injury. "It looked like he (injured the thumb) when he was finishing a throw. That wasn't the injury that limited him. You saw him, he takes us right down the field on the opening drive of the second half. Looked like the stud that we know and love. Unfortunately, it looked like that injury occurred that kept him out for the rest of the game. It did occur when he ended up catching the two-point attempt."

Since being acquired by the Rams in 2021, Matthew Stafford missed eight games. He played the full season in 2021, when the Rams won the Super Bowl, but missed half the season last year because of a neck injury. He also handled shoulder issues.

Brett Rypien is the only backup quarterback on the 53-man roster. Rookie Stetson Bennett is on the non-football injury list. There's no other option on the practice squad either, so the Rams will presumably look at the market for alternatives — at least to be the backup if Rypien has to start a couple of games.

The Rams are 3rd in the NFC West, with a 3-5 record. Even though this season was expected to be a rebuilding effort — which included parting ways with Jalen Ramsey and being the least expensive roster in football —, the team is practically in the NFC wild card race.
