The Washington Commanders are trading their top defender and sack leader Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported just before noon on Tuesday.

The Commanders will receive a 2024 second-round pick in exchange for Sweat, per Schefter.

Sweat was in the last year of his contract with the Commanders and set to become a free agent after this year, which means a lucrative extension in Chicago is on the horizon for him.

The Bears' biggest team need ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline was at defensive end and they made it happen with Sweat, who will be able to come in and make an immediate impact.

Sweat, 27, has logged 6.5 sacks and 32 tackles in 2023 so far.

He leaves Washington after registering a total of 35.5 sacks through 67 career games.

With the Commanders holding a 3-5 record midway through the season, it only made sense to move on from their former 2019 first-round pick and add more draft capital.

Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew has until 4 p.m. Tuesday to make another trade.
