The New Orleans Saints were reportedly 'close' to making a major move at the NFL trade deadline.
According to Ian Rapoport and other sources, the Saints and Las Vegas Raiders were in deep talks for wide receiver Hunter Renfrow. Trading for him would reunite the slot receiver with QB Derek Carr.
The two sides could not agree to the details of a deal before Tuesday's afternoon deadline, though.
"The only one I thought might happen was Hunter Renfrow going to the Saints. Just so much contractual stuff that they had to work out. Who was going to pay his salary. Didn't get it done by yesterday. Just in the end, just did not end up happening."
— Rapoport on the potential trade falling through
The money was probably the most likely hurdle that the two sides could not figure out. Renfrow has a $13.71 million cap hit next season. It would take some legit maneuvering to get around that piece of his deal.
According to NFL Network, the Saints wanted to get Renfrow's cap hit for this season reduced, too. In that scenario, the Raiders would have needed to make that work.
The Raiders have not used the former Pro Bowl wideout very often at all this season. Renfrow has been targeted just 16 times in 8 games so far this year for Las Vegas.
Renfrow was a Pro Bowler in 2021 when he 103 passes for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. It will be intriguing to see if the Saints make a move for him during the offseason to give him a fresh start elsewhere.
