Adjusting the Green Bay Packers defense to face the Los Angeles Rams was going to be hard anyway. They traded cornerback Rasul Douglas to the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday, while cornerback Eric Stokes and safety Darnell Savage will miss at least three more games as they are on the injured reserve.
And, during this week, two new injuries among starting defensive players have appeared. On Thursday, safety Rudy Ford was limited because of a calf injury. On Friday, he didn't practice and is officially listed as questionable to play on Sunday. Following team's trends, there's a decent chance Ford won't play.
That means both starting safeties wouldn't be available against the Rams, forcing defensive coordinator Joe Barry to go with veteran Jonathan Owens and seventh-round rookie Anthony Johnson Jr.
The other safeties on the 53-man roster are Zayne Anderson and Dallin Leavitt. They also have Innis Gaines and rookie Benny Sapp III on the practice squad.
Another problem arose on Friday. Off-ball linebacker Quay Walker, who hadn't been listed on the previous injury reports, didn't practice and is questionable to play as well.
“He (Walker) came in feeling tight today,” LaFleur said. “So he did not practice.”
De'Vondre Campbell came back against the Minnesota Vikings last week, so at least they will have one of their starters ready to go. The immediate replacement if Walker can't go is Isaiah McDuffie, but veteran special teamer Eric Wilson is another alternative. Kristian Welch is also listed as an inside linebacker, but he's exclusively a special teamer.
Non-contact jersey for Aaron Jones
It's week 9 of the 2023 season, and running back Aaron Jones hasn't been fully healthy for a single Green Bay Packers game. After practicing on a limited basis all week, which included a red non-contact jersey, Jones is expected to play on Sunday versus the Los Angeles Rams.
“He did a great job,” LaFleur mentioned. “We did that (non-contact jersey) for his own protection, making sure people wouldn't knock him over. He looked good, ready to get him loose.”
The offensive playmaker injured his hamstring in week 1, during the win over the Chicago Bears. Since then, he missed three games, against the Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, and Las Vegas Raiders. When he played, Jones was on a pitch count. The running back is yet to have double digit carries in a single game this season.
Good news
Besides Aaron Jones, cornerback Jaire Alexander (back), left guard Elgton Jenkins (knee), tight end Luke Musgrave (ankle), and left tackle Yosh Nijman (foot) are also off the injury report and good to go on Sunday.
