The Dallas Cowboys are 5-3 at the midseason mark and it's time for us to recap some of the best we've seen so far. Recently, I listed my MVPs of the Cowboys at each phase of the game so far.

In this post, I'm answering who's been the biggest surprise of the 2023 Cowboys nine weeks into the season.

Who am I picking? Well, I kind of hate to do it since I already listed him as one of my three MVPs in the post I mentioned above, but he's the undeniably correct answer to this question.

It's got to be kicker Brandon Aubrey.

Who saw Aubrey's rise coming? I'm not sure even the Cowboys, did! Consider what I wrote in my previous piece:

Aubrey's unlikely journey includes an MLS stint, a USFL stint, and… 4+ years of coding. His LinkedIn profile still reads "I am now exploring employment opportunities in professional soccer and the Computer Software Industry."

In the offseason, head coach Mike McCarthy claimed he saw some of Mason Crosby's power in Aubrey, but he's shown us so much more than power (which he obviously has as he has hit 4-of-4 attempts of 50+ yards).

Aubrey's consistency has been impressive, setting the NFL record for the most consecutive made field goals to start a career. He's a perfect 19-of-19 following nine weeks and he seems to be ready to keep growing that number.

It's gotten to the point that Cowboys Nation doesn't even get nervous anymore when he takes the field. In Week 8, when he attempted a 58-yard field goal against the Los Angeles Rams, I was excited but I surely wasn't thinking "He might not make this one."

It seemed like we all knew what was about to happen and it did. The football hit the net right down the middle. No shortage of power nor lack of accuracy was to be seen.

The kid is special and the Cowboys deserve credit for having found him in such a scarce kicker free-agent market. He's easily the biggest surprise at the midseason mark and I'm not sure anyone will be able to put up much of a fight the rest of the season.
