Trailing the Washington Commanders by three points, the New England Patriots were set to get the ball back with just under three minutes remaining.
However, a disastrous offsides penalty allowed the Commanders to take more time off the clock, which ultimately helped them secure the victory.
The Commanders were punting the ball away, and Demario Douglas was back and came away with a nice return. Yet, Mack Wilson Sr. was called for jumping offsides during the punt, resulting in a first down for Washington.
And on Monday after watching the film back, Belichick voiced his true opinion on what happened.
“There were a couple things,” Belichick said. “First of all, I’m not sure he was in the neutral zone. We talked about the placement of the ball before the game. But looking at it last night, I’m not sure he was in the neutral zone. He flinched, but I don’t think he was in the neutral zone.
The Patriots were eventually able to hold Washington, forcing them to punt. Mac Jones got the ball back with two minutes remaining. They attempted to charge down the field and while in the Commanders side of the field, Jones attempted to find JuJu Smith-Schuster, but the receiver let the ball slip through his fingers resulting in an interception.
That was it for the Patriots, with the Commanders kneeling on the next play.
With this loss, New England dropped to 2-7 on the season.
