In the NFL, undrafted free agents are typically viewed as camp bodies.
Used to keep starters fresh and play snaps in the preseason, most of these players don't see past August in the NFL.
But one Steelers UDFA has not only defied the odds and made the roster in back to years, he's become a foundational piece for the Pittsburgh Steelers. His name is Jaylen Warren:
A Breath Of Fresh Air
Sunday was the first time in Warren's young career that he touched triple digits on the ground. It was also the first time he was introduced with the starters. Warren took one less attempt than Najee Harris, yet had the same amount of Touchdowns (1), more yards at 101 to Najee's 82, and averaged a yard and a half more per carry.
And Warren may just be getting started:
Now I'm not here to rile up the bee's nest that is the Warren vs. Harris fodder, but the proof is in the pudding when it comes to Warren's ability to play in this league, and his ceiling may be even higher than I anticipated as lead back.
Warren is obviously catching the attention of the Steeers coaching staff, evidenced by his naming as a co-starter along with the distribution of carries against the Packers.
But you know you're doing something right when publications start making things up in your favor:
So we'll see just how great Warren can be. If you're going to say the line isn't good enough for Najee, and then you watch Warren run through holes on a weekly basis, you have to give him credit where it's due.
I know Pittsburgh will, as I expect him to be there for some time.
