What do New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich have in common?
While they are both very successful in their respective leagues, there is one specific thing that former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski pointed out.
"I think Coach Belichick will definitely be the head coach. He's kind of grandfather-claused in," Gronkowski said during his appearance on FanDuelTV's Up & Adams Show.. "I would kind of compare it to Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs. The guy is an absolute legend. He kind of has the same coaching style as Coach Belichick as well."
And similar to the current state of the Patriots under Belichick, the Spurs also had some really rough years while Popovich was leading the charge.
Yet despite those challenges, Popovich remained the coach through it all. And now his team is doing quite well.
"He lost Tim Duncan. He had a couple down years," Gronkowski explained. "He got the number one pick. He's back now with this new big man. He's electrified (Victor) Wembanyama… Coach Popovich is back."
The Patriots currently have a 2-8 record, having most recently lost a winnable contest against the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt, Germany.
With that, ESPN predicts that after the season is over, the Patriots will hold the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. But things could change, and they still have a chance to get the first overall.
So with that, they can grab a star player and start a new era for the organization.
"This could play out the same way," Gronkowski said. "Coach Belichick trying to find his new footing."
