The New Orleans Saints suffered a rough loss in Week 3. They led the Green Bay Packers by a score of 17-0 entering the fourth quarter.
After that, the Packers scored 18 points. New Orleans did not score again. After the game, head coach Dennis Allen said that they felt like one slip through their hands, and he is absolutely correct.
The Saints dominated for the first three quarters of the game. The offense made splash plays. The defense suffocated Jordan Love and his wide receivers.
That being said, a conservative mindset from the Saints following Derek Carr's injury did them in against Green Bay.
Pete Carmichael Jr.'s play-calling became stale, and Jameis Winston did not make the plays to take the win. The Saints abandoned their running game, especially with Taysom Hill, late in the game. That was another major mistake. His impact throughout the first three quarters was clear, but they went away from it.
The Packers took advantage of their passive decisions, and ultimately, took the victory from the Saints.
The loss culminated in the Saints' final offensive drive, where they settled for a long field goal attempt. Rookie kicker Blake Grupe missed it, and that was the nail in the coffin.
Going forward, with or without Carr, the Saints have to take chances. If they backfire, that's football, but Carmichael must give a bit more of the reigns to both parts of his offense.
New Orleans will look to get back on track in Week 4 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
