Jets fans who wanted the team to add a veteran QB to the fold have finally gotten their wish. Kind of.
Veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian is signing with the Jets, pending a physical, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Siemian played for the Jets in 2019. He was not good. He went three for six for three yards in limited action.
Siemian most recently spent training camp and the preseason with the Bengals, but didn’t make their roster. He has also been with the Bears, Saints, Titans, Vikings and Broncos.
In his NFL career, Siemian has started 30 games and gone 13-17 as a starter, throwing 42 touchdown passes and 28 interceptions. He joins Wilson and Tim Boyle on the Jets’ quarterback depth chart.
This can't be the move Jets fans were hoping for. Siemian was brought in ostensably because he Is familiar with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett's system. Siemian's OC in Chicago, Luke Getsy, spent three seasons on the Green Bay Packers staff with Hackett, so there could be some overlapping familiarity with the offenses.
Here is the question I have: Why? If you are bringing someone in to compete with Zach Wilson, you couldn't do any better than Trevor Siemian? And if you are bringing him in because he knows the system, then why is Tim Boyle needed?
This is a tentative half measure that is a slap in the face to team and the fans. The Jets seem determined to force Zach Wilson down our throats. The plan at this point seems to be to watch him flounder on the field and then tell us how much he improved in his "pocket presence" after the game.
Trevor Siemian is a journeyman backup who can hand the ball off in a pinch or throw the ball 15 times a game in a spot start. He isn't a guy to lead a team for a season. He has a very low ceiling and almost no upside. He's essentially another Tim Boyle.
I am not sure I can remember ever seeing such a talented roster wasted in the NFL by an organizations unwillingness to admit what they have in the quarterback is simply not up to standards.
At this point, general manager Joe Douglas needs to address the media and explain his tactics for this season. We have not heard from Douglas and Jets fans would like to believe that it is because he is working the phones trying to improve the quarterback position after Aaron Rodgers went down.
It now seems like he is too busy coming up with small victories to tell the media about how much better Zach Wilson has gotten.
Joe Namath, Jets’ fans, and media have lost all faith in Zach Wilson
The list of people who think Zach Wilson can turn it around is shrinking by the day.
