There were a lot of Seattle Seahawks fans that were very excited to see Devon Witherspoon play football for the first time in his young career.
The wait was worth it for the most part, especially for a guy that was selected so high in the first round, but it is also fair to say that the results were a little mixed as a whole.
Here is where Witherspoon stood out:
We can start with the good.
Witherspoon had a huge stop on fourth down where he jumped a route for a Lions pass-catcher, smacked the ball out of the air, and killed the drive by himself in a huge feat of athletic ability that also showcased a very high football IQ.
Witherspoon was able to recover almost immediately once the ball was in the air, and a play like that was the exact reason why the Seahawks took Witherspoon so high in the first place.
More of that would easily have Witherspoon in the DROY conversation.
On the rough end, Witherspoon did give up a touchdown reception when he bit on a flea flicker.
It didn't look great on the tape, but this is actually much easier to explain away than the successes in this game.
While yes, you don't want to see this from a guy that does have such a high football IQ, this likely has far more to do with Witherspoon simply looking for every possible opportunity after having to wait for his first reps.
It sucks to let a play like that off, but it is unlikely to happen again.
Taken together, it is was exactly what the Seahawks needed from their rookie; not perfect, but a perfect way of growing a guy that could become one of the best corners in the NFL very soon.
