The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still a pass-based offense, but it has been obvious that making the run better this season has been a key focus for Dave Canales and company.
It isn't perfect yet, but there are signs that the attack is moving in the right direction.
The loss of Chase Edmonds to an injury isn't going to be a massive change due to the fact that Rachaad White and Sean Tucker are the lead guys for now, but the absence of Edmonds could force the Bucs to make a move to find a proven third option to pair with White and Tucker. Why not look to Super Bowl champion Cam Akers?
Cam Akers has been a bit of a weird player to peg down during his time in the NFL.
Akers looked good as a rookie, suffered an injury during his second year, played in a winning Super Bowl performance, requested a trade, feuded with Sean McVay publicly a few times, and has now been a healthy scratch in 2023, indicating he is on the market.
Based on that strange history and the obvious animosity between Akers and the Rams, it seems likely that he could be available for a very cheap pick.
The Bucs have picks to trade and the need to be good now. At 2-0, this team has a legitimate shot of making some noise in a pretty weak NFC if they can keep up their current level of play, and having a dependable room of running backs will go a long way for this team.
Akers isn't exactly the most proven commodity out there, but he is young, doesn't have too much tread on the tires, can contribute in all aspects of the offense, and, perhaps most importantly-he is far better than Ke'Shawn Vaughn.
Vaughn is currently next in line to take the reps that Edmonds is giving up, and that isn't get news for the Buccaneer rushing attack.
Akers is a bit of a gamble for more reasons than one, but any chance to get the guy that played in 2020 or 2022 is worth giving up a Day Three pick, and that seems fair for the situation.
Do the Bucs make the move? It feels a little too adventurous for Todd Bowles, but perhaps Jason Licht sees the sense in adding a young guy that has the right experience and fits in with the offense well.
Don't rule it out just yet.

A loss for the Buccaneers.
