The New England Patriots have waived quarterback Matt Corral from the exempt/left squad list and have released quarterback Ian Book from the practice squad, the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed reports.
Corral was placed on the reserve/left squad list after he reportedly left the Patriots without notice. This meant that he was removed from the 53-man roster, but could not sign with another team. The Patriots could choose to activate him, but they would first have to clear a roster spot.
Prior to the season opener, Bill Belichick confirmed that the team had been in contact with the quarterback, but he remained on the list. It was Bailey Zappe who was moved up to the active roster and served as the back up to Mac Jones.
Corral was claimed off waivers after New England opted to waive quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham on cutdown day, with the former Panther joining Mac Jones on the active roster.
Yet, this news ends what can only be described as an odd situation.
Along with waiving Corral, the Patriots also released Book.
His stint with the Patriots was short and it's clear that he didn't fit in with New England.
Book's NFL career began in 2021 when he was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round. He started in one game that season, going 12-20 for 135 yards and two interceptions. However, he was then waived by the team in Aug. 2022.
He was signed by the Patriots on Wednesday after a successful work out.
The Patriots are now in need of another quarterback, with only Jones and Zappe remaining on the roster.
