On Sunday night during the New England Patriots Sunday Night Football game against the Miami Dolphins, a tragic event occurred and has prompted an investigation.
According to the Massachusetts State Police, Dale Mooney suffered an “apparent medical event” during the fourth quarter of the game. The 53-year-old fan was sitting in the 300s section and was rushed to the nearby Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was later pronounced dead.
According to Boston 25 News, Mooney was being taunted by Dolphins fans during the game which later turned into an altercation that resulted in stadium security having to move in and break it up.
“It looked like people grabbing and pulling at each other at first at some point in the guy in the Dolphins jersey punched the victim twice in the face and that’s when the victim fell into his seat unconscious,” Joey Kilmartin, who was a witness, told Boston 25 News. “The guy in the Dolphins jersey got hauled away by police and that’s when everybody noticed something was wrong a minute or so later the guy still hadn’t made any movement it really didn’t look like he was breathing.”
Boston 25 News added that Mooney was a "lifelong fan of the Patriots," and had been a season ticket holder for 30 years. Mooney's wife told the station that he was "a 'good dad' to their two adult sons."
His wife added that based on the video, Mooney never threw a punch during the altercation.
ESPN's Mike Reiss further reported that a spokesman from the Norfolk (Mass.) District Attorney's Office said that they are "investigating the facts and circumstances of the man's death, including the sequence of events prior to the medical incident."
Videos of the altercation with Mooney were released by WJAR-TV on Monday and can be viewed here. This was one of two medical situations at Gillette on Sunday night, with another fan suffering an apparent cardiac arrest. The fan survived.
MassLive reported that two off-duty firefighters helped the fan prior to kickoff, giving him CPR for 10 minutes until he regained consciousness.
