The 49ers are in need of cornerback depth after a knee injury sidelined Samuel Womack III, and they could be about to turn to a former first-round pick to provide it.
The Niners, per Field Yates of ESPN, had Bradley Roby in for a visit on Monday.
Roby, a first-round pick of the Broncos in 2014, won the Super Bowl with Denver in the 2015 season. The Broncos beat the Panthers in Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium.
He has spent the last two seasons with the Saints following a spell with the Texans. Roby had looked poised to serve as New Orleans' starting slot corner this year, but was surprisingly cut before the start of the season.
Roby started 10 games for the Saints in 2022 and the numbers were encouraging.
Indeed, Roby allowed a completion on just 54 percent of his targets, which was the 29th-best among all qualifying defenders in the NFL, and his passer rating when targeted was only 79.4.
At 31 years old, Roby looks to still have enough in the tank to the point where he would be worthy of a flier from the 49ers.
Each of the 49ers' top four cornerbacks — Charvarius Ward, Deommodore Lenoir, Ambry Thomas and Isaiah Oliver — have played significant snaps through the first two weeks of the campaign.
That heightens the need for the 49ers to have depth on which they can rely in the wake of the injury to Womack and the Cardinals signing defensive back Qwuantrezz Knight off San Francisco's practice squad. Roby would represent a reliable insurance policy.
Kyle Shanahan promises to solve the curious case of Elijah Mitchell
The second-string running back did not play a snap in Week 2.
