Cleveland is going to make a move at running back before long to address the need left after losing Nick Chubb for the season.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that the Browns are currently looking at their options and that Chubb will have surgery to end his 2023 season after just two games.
“We are working on that (adding another RB). You don't replace Nick Chubb,” said Stefanski. “You just don't do that. Not one person that replaces a player of his caliber."
According to Jordan Schultz, Cleveland has checked in on Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers, who is believed to have played his last game with the Rams.
Akers was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Rams out of Florida State. As a rookie, Akers had 625 rushing yards in 13 games (six starts). In 2021, he played just a single game due to injury.
Last season, Akers made nine starts and rumbled for 786 yards on the ground. The 24-year-old closed the season strong with three straight 100-yard games in 2022.
It has been rough sledding for Akers in 2023. In Week 1, Akers had 22 carries for just 29 yards, then did not play in Week 2. With Akers believed to have played his last game in Los Angeles, he could be cut. Then, the Browns would be able to sign him to a better deal for the team.
Cleveland will continue to weigh their options of adding depth to the running back room. Said player will join Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong Jr. with the Browns.
