The Kansas City Chiefs are shaking up their practice squad a bit ahead of Week 3 of the 2023 NFL season.
League sources tell A to Z Sports that the Chiefs have terminated the practice squad contract of DT Danny Shelton. In a corresponding move, the team signed CB Darius Rush to the practice squad. The latter move was expected after the team waived Rush from the 53-man roster to make room for Chris Jones over the weekend.
Shelton was an odd man out in the Kansas City defensive tackle room both now and during 53-man roster cuts. The team currently carries five defensive tackles on the 53-man roster, in addition to Matt Dickerson on the practice squad.
The play of Derrick Nnadi seems to have left the team with enough confidence to set loose the former first-round pick Shelton, who made strides this offseason after spending the 2022 NFL season on the Chiefs' practice squad. They also have players like Neil Farrell Jr. and Keondre Coburn, who fill very similar roles on the defensive line.
As for CB Darius Rush, the Chiefs will get a chance to develop him on the practice squad. They first claimed him from the Indianapolis Colts during 53-man roster cuts, who had selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft. The 23-year-old was always going to be a bit of a project as a defender as he didn't start playing cornerback until 2019. He could wind up making contributions on special teams later this season should Kansas City run into any injuries in the secondary.
Chiefs break obscure NFL record that held up for 55 years
The Kansas City Chiefs now hold an obscure NFL record for the most consecutive games without losing by more than four points.
