It shouldn't surprise many Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans that the team didn't get too aggressive on the trade market, even if the team does still have a need at running back.
Cam Akers wasn't exactly the most exciting option on the planet to keep this running game intact and potentially take it to the next level, so while missing on Akers doesn't hurt too bad in the long run, the Bucs do still have a need.
The running back room is extremely shallow as it stands, and counting on Ke'Shawn Vaughn to shoulder the load as the emergency RB is counterproductive to the team starting the year 3-0.
The running scheme and production has simply fallen short of expectations for far too long now.
Not only have the backs failed to live up to their expectations, but the scheme itself and when/how the plays have been called rarely work in favor of keeping the rushing attack alive.
Baker Mayfield and a decent passing attack have paired well with a new play-caller in Dave Canales to create a slightly better rushing product, but it still isn't good enough, and it certainly isn't good enough to prop Vaughn up.
The Buccaneers need more of a proven option in this room with Chase Edmonds out. Whether that new player comes from the free agent market or via a trade matters little.
What does matter is that the Bucs don't settle for mediocrity in a part of the team they claim to care deeply about.
If the team really does care about the run and keeping it alive, staying the course as is doesn't seem like the best plan.
This writer may get proven wrong, but the upcoming slate could see the Bucs with some of their worst rushing games of the season if they aren't careful.
