Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has had a bit of an issue in taking care of the football this season.
Jackson has fumbled the football four times in the ongoing campaign, which is tied with three other quarterbacks for the league lead. The two-time Pro Bowler lost two of those fumbles, including one in Baltimore’s home loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Jackson did not have much of a problem in holding on to the football in recent seasons. For one, he coughed up the football a mere five times in 12 games played in the 2022 campaign.
When asked during a press conference on Wednesday to touch on his fumbles issue this year, Jackson took some time to explain just where it went wrong on all four.
"They were in the pocket," Jackson said. "Most of them [happened when I was] in the pocket. I had that one against the Texans when I was trying to make a guy miss, but most of them have been in the pocket [while I'm] trying to throw the ball. The ball was loose [when] I was throwing it, and it's been hit, but I have to do a better job at [protecting] it.
"It affects the game."
Baltimore has lost three fumbles this season, which is tied with four other teams for the third-most.
In the big picture, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is hoping to see his team clean up its ball security issues.
"The No. 1 thing is taking care of the football," Harbaugh said on Monday. "It has to be, and we have to become great at that in order to win football games, and we all understand that; everybody knows it. So, we'll work on it even more and even harder, because it's something that's come up now, and we can't make excuses for it."
Baltimore is set to face a Cleveland Browns team in Week 4 that has turned the ball over seven times this year.
