When Brock Purdy was intercepted by Amik Robertson in the penultimate game of last year's regular season, the prevailing school of thought was that more would probably follow over the course of tough postseason tests and the start of a second season in the NFL in which defenses would have the benefit having a lot of his tape at their disposal.
The 49ers' starting quarterback has not thrown an interception since over the course of 190 successive throws.
His ability to take care of the ball has been pivotal to the 49ers' 3-0 start, San Francisco winning the turnover battle in each of its three victories.
Stretching his run of interception-less throws into the 200s will be at the forefront of Purdy's mind on Sunday as the 49ers face a Cardinals team that will be desperate to find anything that can tip the scales in their favor in an apparent mismatch of NFC West rivals.
Purdy said at a press conference on Thursday:
"I want to help my team win at the end of the day, and that comes down to the decisions I make. I get the ball every single play, anytime I'm dropping back and I have to make a decision with the ball in my hands of course I pride myself on not harming our team. That just comes down to trying to be selfless, making the right decisions, being prepared for situations and scenarios and giving our guys on offense a shot to the catch the ball, and obviously being smart for our defense, not putting them in a bad situation with anything like that, making the wrong decisions, for me I definitely like that's on my mind every single snap, being smart with the ball."
Purdy is one of only four quarterbacks who have not thrown a pick this season, but that does not mean there haven't been opportunities for opposing defenders.
Per Pro Football Focus, Purdy has made four turnover worthy plays this season. He also hasn't always been pinpoint with his accuracy, but his proficiency in delivering the ball early with anticipation has often negated his slightly off-target throws.
Asked about that trait of his game, Purdy responded:
"I feel like that's huge, anticipation in this game, in our scheme, being on time with guys, throwing before their breaks, before a DB can catch up. Coach always says the man travels faster than the ball here, the NFL man, everyone's got great speed, great athleticism so I've got to anticipate certain throws. We're in the NFL, everyone's really good, so anticipation I feel like is huge."
Everybody will be anticipating a 49ers win on Sunday despite the Cardinals' shock victory over the Cowboys last week and, if Purdy keeps his streak alive, there is little to suggest that won't be the outcome.
