Kansas City Chiefs rookie WR Rashee Rice is coming off a true breakout performance against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12.

Rice recorded eight receptions on 10 targets for 107 yards and a touchdown. The performance was the best single-game performance of his young career. It was also the most receiving yards by a Chiefs rookie since Dwayne Bowe put up 164 yards in 2007.

The performance helped pave the way to a comeback win over the Raiders in Week 12 after the team found themselves in a 14-point hole. The performance certainly didn't go unnoticed by the coaching staff or his teammates. In fact, Rice was already reaping the rewards during practice on Wednesday.

Chiefs rookie WR Rashee Rice rewarded after breakout game

Chiefs WR Rashee Rice might still be listed as a backup on the depth chart, but it's clear that he has ascended the wide receiver ranks in Kansas City. He's earned starts in four of the last five games played, and his latest performance has earned him a luxury that rookies don't often get under Andy Reid.

According to Arrowhead Pride's Pete Sweeney, Rice wasn't among the receivers going through Dave Toub's special teams punt/kick return drills during the open portion of practice on Wednesday. That's typically a luxury that is only reserved for the most seasoned veterans at the receiver position.

That's a pretty strong sign that Rice has entered the inner circle on offense with the likes of skill players like Isiah Pacheco and Travis Kelce. Really, it indicates that he's someone whose talents are going to be strictly reserved for the offensive side of the ball in the future.

What's the goal for Rice moving forward?

After such a big performance in Week 12, it's clear that the Chiefs have some big plans for Rice during the stretch run.

"He's getting a lot better," Mahomes said of Rice on Wednesday. "He doesn't make the same mistakes, I think that's the biggest thing. There are little things here and there, where we might not be on the same page, but once we talk about it on the sideline, he doesn't make that mistake again. That's why you've seen he's gotten better and better throughout the season."

As for the goal moving forward, it starts with continued practice and preparation. He's reached a big milestone with his first 100-yard receiving game, but he needs to continue to do the things that got him to that moment, otherwise, he'll fall into the trap that is complacency.

"The goal for him now is to keep working, keep getting better, and don't be satisfied with where he's at," Mahomes told reporters. "Hopefully, get him more bigger games as his career goes on."

A single 100-yard game is great, but stacking a pair of them would go a long way toward proving that Rice has, in fact, taken the next step.
